Brandywine Homes has started to build 53 townhomes on a four-acre site next to the Candlewood Country Club golf course just outside the Whittier city limits.

It’s a golf-themed community with street names such as Bunker Lane, East Fairway Drive, East Birdie Way and South Eagle Lane. As a bonus, Candlewood Villas, located at 13900 Telegraph Road, will offer buyers a one-year membership to the neighboring country club.

Like many local builders, Brandywine is busy: currently selling homes in Buena Park, Long Beach, Yorba Linda and La Puente. Southern California builders are selling new homes at a pace not seen in nine years.

CoreLogic data shows 18,117 new residences sold in the 12 months ended in May across the four counties covered by the Southern California News Group. That’s the best performance since January 2009, and it’s up 7.7 percent in a year. In Los Angeles County, builders had 4,205 sales — a selling pace above 4,200 for seven months, best since April 2011.
