Creating a Productive Home Office Space

Many companies allow, and even encourage, people to work from home whether they are employees or consultants. If this is you, you know that every day can’t be a ‘work from a coffee shop’ kind of day, so you’ll need a home office that’s comfortable, convenient and professional. If you’re transitioning to a home office from your corporate space, or you simply want to enhance the one you currently have, here are some tips to get the most out of your home-based workspace:

1. Be high tech. Being at home means you may not have quick, or any, access to an IT department if things start to go wrong with your devices. Invest in new items with call support. This can help save your day and minimize your downtime.
2. Good lighting is a must. Look around your space to determine where the best light comes from. If you have big, airy windows, arrange your furniture accordingly. If you’re in a darker area, you may need to have professionally installed lights.
3. Find ways to keep in touch with the real world. Whether it’s a quick drive for breakfast with friends or a walk around the park, you’ll get a nice change of scenery.
4. Keep your space productive. Although it’s tempting to mix your personal life with your professional life – try to keep the two separated as much as you can. Your desk and work area should be free of home-related distractions like bills, grocery lists and kids’ homework.
5. Have a dedicated space or room. This seems obvious but be creative. If you don’t have an extra room in your house to use as an office, perhaps you can dedicate a space in a non-traditional location like a large landing, hall or loft.

Brandywine Homes often has rooms in its houses that can be dedicated to a private, professional working area. Although working from home isn’t for everyone, it can be a wonderful alternative to commuting and provide a little professional freedom. You can tour our models in various Southern California locales to see which room could be your perfect home office!
