What Do Homebuyers Typically Buy After Moving In?

Once you have purchased your new house you will find there are numerous items you need to buy.

Consider the following items home buyers often find they need to purchase after they have moved into their new home. Budget for these items in advance so they won’t result in an unexpected cost after you have purchased your new home!

Window Treatments

A new house does not come with window treatments. Most people want privacy. In addition, it is often helpful to have bedroom curtains and/or blinds so the early morning light doesn’t wake you up before the alarm goes off.  Therefore it is likely you will want to install window treatments right after you move in. Consider if you prefer curtains, blinds or a combination of both. It is also possible to purchase room darkening blinds which may help make it easier to sleep. Evaluate each room to determine if you will need window treatments for privacy or light control. Then take measurements so you know what sizes you will need when you are shopping.

Bathroom Items

In addition to window treatments, most homeowners buy additional items for their bathroom. A shower curtain is often necessary along with bath mats with a non-slip surface for you to step on when you get out of the tub.

Although you could move your existing bath towels to your new home you may find you would like to replace them. Freshly painted walls may make the old towels look drab. In addition, you may want to select a new color theme for your new bathroom space and will want the towels to coordinate.

Garden Supplies

If your new home includes a grass lawn you will want to purchase a lawnmower. In some cases you will need to put the lawn in yourself so sod or grass seed will be necessary. Depending on the size of your yard you will want to decide between a riding mower or a walk behind.

Another garden item you will need is a garden hose. Whether to water the lawn, wash the car or rinse off muddy shoes, a garden hose is a necessity for all homeowners. If you plan to do any gardening consider a shovel or trowel as well.

Tools

Owning a home means you will need to make simple repairs yourself. If you don’t already own basic tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, hammer, paint brushes, electrical tester, and assorted screws and nails, you will want to purchase them, or wait until you have a home project to complete and then buy what you need.

Appliances

Most homes come equipped with all major appliances but there are a few items that may not be included. A microwave may not be built in and therefore may need to be purchased after you have moved into the home. In addition, an outdoor grill is not typically part of a new home but is often desired by homeowners.

Pet

Although not on every homeowner’s “to-buy” list, some people can’t wait to own their own home so they can have a pet. Many apartments do not allow pets. If you have been longing for a canine or feline friend you can now adopt a pet for your new house!
